What was to be an evening block party in a Brooklyn neighborhood turned into a horrific safety battle when at least two gunmen opened fire early Sunday morning.

Dozens of people were injured and two were killed when gunfire erupted during Brooklyn Day, an annual community event in the Brooklyn borough south of Baltimore. Police received multiple reports of a shooting in the 800 block of Gretna Court around 12:35 p.m. Sunday.

Aaliyah Gonzales, 18, died at the scene and Kylis Fagbemi, 20, died in hospital, authorities said. Another 28 shooting victims, ages 13 to 32, were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Three of the 28 were in critical condition early Sunday morning.

In addition to Gonzalez and Fagbemi, the injured victims included two 13-year-olds, a 14-year-old girl, three 15-year-olds, five 16-year-olds, four 17-year-olds, five 18-year-olds age children. and three 19-year-old youths; three women aged 20, 23 and 32, and a man aged 22 and 31. More than half of the victims were women, and more than three-quarters of them were teenagers.

Sunday’s violence is believed to be the largest mass shooting in Baltimore’s history. However, official data on mass shootings dates back as far as 2014. The Gun Violence Archive, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit that documents shootings across the country, has not listed a single incident in Baltimore since 2014, the earliest mass shooting to report more than a dozen victims. Baltimore continues to grapple with continued high levels of violent crime, with homicides surpassing 300 in 2022 for the eighth consecutive year. This year, more attention has been focused on young people who commit or become victims of gun violence.

Baltimore Acting Police Chief Richard Worley said “at least” two people were shot, but police are still determining the total. He said it was unclear whether the shooting was targeted or because the shooter fired indiscriminately.

Officials urged anyone with information or video footage to report it to police.

“This was a reckless, cowardly act that took place here that changed many lives and resulted in the loss of two,” Mayor Brandon Scott said at a news conference. Hear my voice very clearly: We will not stop until we find you. We will find you.”

In the hours leading up to the shooting, neighbors began grilling hot dogs and burgers to feed the community, always serving the children first. The streets around Gretna Court featured pony rides, face painting, dance competitions, local rappers and DJs, and over a hundred people gathered throughout the evening.

Then gunshots erupted from the crowd.

Terry Brown was standing outside his Eighth Street home when he heard the barrage of gunfire. A large crowd ran from the courtyard above, leaped over the fence and called for loved ones. Some people panicked and fell down.
