My friend received an amazing SMS from her mother just before The Shawshank Redemption debuted at the Theater Royal: “What, he never saw the movie?!”
It is a fact. I’ve never seen the movie or read the novel, so I have no idea what The Shawshank Plot is as I wait for the performance to debut at the famed Newcastle theater this week.
The moment the curtain drops and the lights go down, the world of Shawshank Redemption comes to life as three naked men enter the theater to summon the convicts.
For those who have been living under a rock, this is the account of Andy Dufresne’s time spent in the depressing Shawshank State Penitentiary after being falsely convicted. Ben Onwukwe, who starred in Burning, portrays Ellis “Red” Redding, a confidant in jail, while BAFTA candidate Joe Absolom is moody Dufresne.
Early on in development, David Esbjornson’s adaptation of the movie does a terrific job. A stark contrast to the whirling pantomime exploits that had occupied the same space for a month was the audience’s dead quiet during courtroom conflicts, which towered above the dimly lit theatrical audience.
Long before anyone found out about his horrific deed, Onwukwe, a charming narrator like Red, had his hand eaten off by theatergoers. Meanwhile, Jay Marsh’s ecstatic Bogs Diamond and Rooster Leigh Jones’ cunning physique are inseparable.
The first act of the play focuses on arguments amongst inmates, and while the physical altercation needs some audience participation to be fully effective, the sisters’ threat of gang rape is undoubtedly unsettling.
There are ups and downs throughout The Shawshank Redemption’s second, longer act. When given the chance to shine, Kenneth Jay as Brooksey and Kurt Dittman as Tommy Williams both seize the moment. Jay’s performance in particular is energizing.
