When Schmidt then a member of the Shawano County Board of Trustees was accused of strangling an employee to death on his family’s farm in November 2019 the first major issues surfaced.

According to only Sky Incident, on November 22 of that year two farm workers informed an official that they had overslept during the morning shift. It is said that Schmidt stormed into the apartment, yelled at her and then became even more enraged when they were not finished 15 minutes later.

The employees then state that they will not work which irritates Schmidt. The victim was then forced onto the bed by Peter who hurt him by pressing down on the base of his neck without his permission. The victim was having trouble breathing and was beginning to lose consciousness but he did not respond because he was afraid of him and worried that if he did, he might do even worse things. The coworker of the victim recorded the conversation on his cell phone. Peter is seen on video grabbing the victim by the throat as the bed sinks and Schmidt later told police that he grabbed the victim by the neck but did not choke him.
