Chief Adebayo Olawale Edun(born April 20, 1956), known as Wale Edun, is a Nigerian economist, investment banker, and politician. He currently serves as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, a position he has held since August 2023. He was previously the Commissioner for Finance in Lagos State under Governor Bola Tinubu.
Educational background
Wale Edun holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of London and a master’s degree in Economics from the University of Sussex.
Career in finance and economics
His career includes roles at Chase Merchant Bank in Lagos and secondments to Wall Street firms. He also worked with The World Bank/IFC on economic and financial initiatives. Edun co-founded Investment Banking & Trust Company Limited (now Stanbic IBTC) and founded the investment management firm Denham Management Limited, which later became the Chapel Hill Denham Group. He also founded West Africa Ratings Limited, now known as Global Credit Ratings (GCR).
Public service and political career
Edun’s public service began as Lagos State Commissioner for Finance from 1999 to 2004 under Governor Bola Tinubu. He also chaired the Board of Trustees for the Ogoni Trust Fund clean-up project. Before his current ministerial role, he was a member of the Presidential Transition Council and served as Special Adviser on Monetary Policies to President Bola Tinubu.
Philanthropy and other interests
Wale Edun is involved with several non-profit organizations, including serving as Chairman of the Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame and the health-based NGO Livewell Initiative.
Personal life
Wale Edun is married to Amy Adwoa Appiah and is the father of British actor Adetomiwa Edun.
