Terrell Carter is an American actor, singer, songwriter, and author from Buffalo, New York

. His career spans music and television, including a recent role in Tyler Perry’s Netflix drama, Beauty in Black. He is also the author of the memoir Problem Child. 

Acting career

Carter gained significant recognition for his role as Warren Hall in the Fox series Empirefrom 2017 to 2019. His other prominent television roles include: 
  • Beauty in Black: Varney in the Netflix series
  • A House Divided: Dante in the series
  • Shooter: A recurring role in the USA Network drama
  • From Scratch: Ken in the Netflix mini-series 
He has also appeared in several films, often working with Tyler Perry:
  • Diary of a Mad Black Woman (2005): His film debut
  • Think Like a Man Too (2014): Co-starred opposite Kevin Hart
  • My Brother’s Wife (2024): Played Detective Benjamin
  • The Microchip that Ruined Halloween(2023): Played Barry Bryant 

Music career

Before his acting career took off, Carter spent five years touring with gospel artist Fred Hammond in the musical group Radical for Christ. He later worked as a songwriter and vocalist under P. Diddy and the Bad Boy Records umbrella. He was then signed by Quincy Jones as a singer-songwriter. Carter has worked with many legendary recording artists throughout his career, including:

He has released several independent albums and provided the vocals for “Father Can You Hear Me” in the film Diary of a Mad Black Woman. 

Author

In 2020, Carter published his memoir, Problem Child, which details his difficult upbringing. The book discusses his life being raised by a mother with special needs in a family filled with secrets and dysfunction. He was inspired to write the book after receiving countless messages from people who found his story inspiring.
