Early life and education

• Family background: Born in Middletown, Ohio, on August 2, 1984, Vance’s early life was marked by financial struggles and instability due to his mother’s addiction. He was primarily raised by his maternal grandparents, who had relocated from Appalachia.
• Military service: After graduating from high school in 2003, Vance enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served for four years, including a tour in Iraq as a combat correspondent.
• Higher education: Using the G.I. Bill, he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and philosophy from Ohio State University in 2009. He then graduated from Yale Law School in 2013, where he met his wife, Usha. 

Professional and literary career

• Law and investment: Following law school, Vance worked as a lawyer and later as a venture capitalist, including for Peter Thiel’s Mithril Capital.
• Hillbilly Elegy: His 2016 memoir, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis, chronicled his Appalachian upbringing and the social issues affecting white working-class communities. The book became a bestseller and was later adapted into a Netflix film. 

Political career

• Initial Trump criticism: Before entering politics, Vance was a vocal critic of Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.
• 2022 Senate election: After reversing his position on Trump, Vance ran for the U.S. Senate in 2022 and won the Republican primary with Trump’s endorsement. He went on to defeat Democratic nominee Tim Ryan in the general election.
• U.S. Senator: During his time in the Senate, Vance was a conservative voice on issues like immigration and foreign policy. He also supported some populist economic policies.
• Vice Presidency: In July 2024, Trump selected Vance as his running mate. Following their victory in the 2024 presidential election, Vance became the 50th Vice President of the United States in January 2025. He is the first Millennial to hold the office.
