Renowned Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala was shot dead in Jahawarke village of Mansa district on Sunday, and two others were injured in the firing. The gruesome incident took place a day after the Mann govt scales down the security given to Moseala, though it was a “temporary” move as claimed by the officials. Here are 10 important facts you must know about Moose Wala’s journey and his murder incident:

1. Sidhu Moose Wala belongs to Moosa village in Mansa district of Punjab and his mother is a village head. After completing graduation in electrical engineering from Punjab, he moved to Canada on a study visa in 2016. His real name is Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, and be became popular as Sidhu Moose Wala in 2017 with his hit track ‘So High’.

2. Moose Wala was booked by the Punjab police in 2020 under the Arms Act on charges of promoting violence and gun culture in his song ‘Panj golian’. He joined the Congress party in December last year and had unsuccessfully contested the Punjab Assembly elections from Mansa, losing by a huge margin of more than 63,000 votes to AAP’s Dr Vijay Singla who has been recently dismissed from Mann Cabinet over corruption charges.

3. The state government had scaled down Moose Wala’s security from four armed guards to two. The move was taken for 424 people amid Mann’s tirade against the “VIP culture”. Extremely popular among the youth with 6.9 million followers on Instagram and nearly 1 crore subscribers on his YouTube channel, Moosewala was criticized for promoting violence in his songs.

4. On Sunday evening, after leaving his home, Moose Wala was driving his SUV when two cars came from the front and chaos unfolded. A CCTV video has emerged showing the two cars following his black SUV.

5. As per the Police officials, eight assailants attacked Moosewala and bullets from three AK-94 rifles, rarely used in Punjab, have been found, which is something shocking, linking the entire incident to a bigger controversy.

6. As per the sources, Sidhu Moose Wala would usually move around in his bullet proof Fortuner, but on Sunday, he was driven in his other luxury car Thar which was unfortunately not bullet-proof.

7. CM Bhagwant Mann has been continuously slammed by the opposition parties after Moose Wala’s murder. Reacting to the incident, CM Mann tweeted: “I am Shocked and Deeply saddened by the gruesome murder of Siddhu Moosewala. Nobody involved will be spared. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and his fans across the world. I appeal everyone to stay calm”

8. Shockingly, a Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar, close aide of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, has claimed responsibility for Sidhu Moosewala’s murder.

9. Senior police officers also said they had been investigating Brar for allegedly planning several murders and attempts to murder from Canada.

10. Bishnoi and his gang, the officer said, have criminal records in Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana, with Bishnoi, lodged in a Rajasthan jail, still managing to run his gang from inside.

In February last year, Brar, with Bishnoi’s help, allegedly planned the murder of Youth Congress Leader Gurlal Singh Balwan in Punjab. Bishnoi’s associates are as infamous as the gangster himself. His associate and friend Sampat Nehra had allegedly planned to kill Bollywood actor Salman Khan and was arrested by the Haryana Special Task Force in Bangalore in 2018. Other key associates of the gang are Kala Jathedi, Monty and Kala Rana. Allegedly involved in 30 murders,  Rana was extradited to India from Thaliand and arrested by DCP Chandra’s team in March. Jathedi, who is allegedly involved in 40 murders, was arrested with his girlfriend Anuradha Chaudhari, referred to as “lady don” in Rajasthan, by the Delhi Police Special Cell in July last year.

Police officials had earlier suspected involvement of gangsters in the crime. They claimed that there had been instances of ransom calls made by gangsters to singers and actors of Punjabi film industry recently. Meanwhile, the opposition parties in the state have been questioning the AAP govt over the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab.
